Does Forum Posting work?
When you begin in online marketing you will be TOLD to do a lot of things. The thing that you have to start with is research. You need to find out exactly what you are going to try to become an expert at. This is necessary, because if you are not an expert, people will see right through you. This is where building credibility becomes key. One of the best and under utilized methods of building credibility is Forum Posting. Forum Posting, when it is done properly, accomplishes a few things. I have been on many forums and I see a lot of people doing the forum posting plan wrong. In fact I even started off doing the posting on forums wrong. I thought it was important that I have links in my posts, and link to things I want to sell, turns out forum admins don't like that. I learned my lesson though.
What makes a good forum post?
Let's first explore what makes a bad forum post. People are on forums for a reason. No the reason is not to make money. The reason people join forums are to find information, and connect with people that have a similar mindset. When you just go on a forum and spew words on the posts and then link to your site, you are creating a bad view of who you are. This is something that happens far too often on forums and creates a lot of work for the site admins.
Instead of just speaking random words it comes back to that same old thing that Google wants, and the same thing that people are looking for. You need to offer something of value! When you go into a forum there are a few things that you are going to know that are going to benefit someone. That is a fair assessment I think? There are also things you don't know, and that is where the real fun is. OK let's cut to the chase. When you are about to post on someone's thread in a forum, consider first the person who started the thread, know their question, and have an answer for it. If you find that someone else has already answered it quite sufficiently then what you need to do is quote their answer and then add to it.
If you are looking for a solution to a problem then it is important that first you search the forum for someone else who had the same problem and then read their thread. Once you have found your answer make a comment at the bottom of that thread about the problem you were having and that you are thankful that that thread is there and that it has helped you.
Did you notice what was missing in that advice?
You will notice that I did not mention anything about links. Why? I'm glad you asked. The deal is, is that people on forums are not looking for things to buy in the forum itself. They are only looking for answers. When you become one of the people that provided good answers, people will want to know more about YOU. What you need to do is provide the main link you want to promote in your signature. Yes the signature is where you get people to click on your links, after you have provided them with valuable information.
In conclusion, the deal is, nothing is easy in marketing anymore. If you are not providing value to your readers, you will not get them to engage with you. The secret to this market today is value. Make sure that what you are promoting is valuable and make sure that you are offering valuable information in your forum posts. This will take some time, but a good scotch takes years to be great, so be patient, be valuable, and your time will come.
