I am not talking about the tinned meat here or the song made famous by Monty Python.
Spam is actually illegal but many people are still receiving messages because people don't care about the laws, and also because not all of these messages are technically spam. It is considered a major nuisance by many in the computer world and can even be harmful. It is free speech run amok.
In an effort to stand out from the crowd, spammers often send their messages as HTML mail, which can carry embedded malicious code. It is a growing problem in other communication media too. Blog comment spam is rampant.
It is also a big problem due to the number of victims affected by it. Some sources estimate that 5-15% of corporate emails are spam. It is known to the law as "unsolicited commercial electronic mail," or UCE, and is usually defined as email in which someone is trying to sell someone else a product or service, or otherwise part recipients from their money.
It is mostly used to advertise products and sometimes to broadcast some political or social commentary. It is also used for phishing and to spread malicious code.
It is designated as unwanted electronic mail sent in large numbers to as many recipients as possible. It is a nuisance to every e-mail user. It is penetrating into other regions of the Internet as well. The creators of the blogging software WordPress report that nearly 87% of all blog comments are also spam. It is mostly sales pitches, so unless your regular mail is all sales pitches, spams will inevitably have a different character. And the spammers would also, of course, have to change (and keep changing) their whole infrastructure, because otherwise the headers would look as bad to the Bayesian filters as ever, no matter what they did to the message body.
Spam is spreading fast all over the Internet and it gets harder and harder to avoid it. There are many methods that can be used to protect the users from these types of messages and other potential threats it can be the bearer of. It is a continuous irritant and the only remedy to this problem is to first receive it and then complain about it.
